The summer art club is a week long course running 9-3pm looking at different aspects of creativity working with a professional artist in a safe, relaxed, enclosed environment. Because it runs over 5 days the children make new friends and work together and at the end of the week they present an exhibition of their work to their family and friends, something that they are always proud to do.

There will be two week long courses running from 9-3pm this year in my art studio in St Peters; July 27-July 31st and August 10th-August 14th.

There will also be some ‘drop-in’ sessions for those who don’t wish to come along for the whole week – 9.30-12 – starting 3rd August-7th August and 17th August-21st August.

Details of the courses to follow, see below for details on last year’s courses:

July 29th – August 2nd           August 12th – August 16th

This summer we will be looking at drawing, painting and printing as well as mosaic making and imaginative paper making, these week long workshops will be very messy so please wear old clothes and be prepared to get your hands dirty!

There are two options available, full week Monday-Friday 29th July – 2nd August 9-3pm;   or part time 9.30-12 week beginning Monday August 12th.  You can book all the workshops if you wish as the subjects studied will vary slightly and the longer workshops will look at each subject in more detail.

Monday 29th July 9-3: BIG AND SMALL – finding inspiration from everything around us, we will hunt down plants, animals and fruit shapes to build up a weird and wonderful portfolio of mark making using large pieces of paper, charcoal and chalk, pastels on sticks, feathers with ink, felt pens and magical colour pigments.  Then we will look into using these drawings to build up a story with a hero (whichever animal we drew in the morning) to make into a fold out story to go inside a match box.

Tuesday 30th July: 9-3: POP ART – We spend the morning sketching animals which will improve our quick decisive marks on paper.  These drawings will then be turned into Monotype and Styrofoam prints which will be the starting point to make bright pop art acrylic paintings.

Wednesday 31st July: 9-3:  MESSY WEDNESDAY – Every week has to have one very messy day and this is it; dress appropriately please! Making gorgeous gooey Gelatine prints of some of the objects we found on Monday and shaving foam Marbelling paper are just two of the fun techniques we will be looking at.

Thursday 1st August: 9-3: MOSAIC – Great opportunity today to try your hand at creating a garden mosaic using small mosaic stones and also hand painting larger ceramic tiles to tell a story that is about the garden; the animals and plants within it.  If you are here all week, the storytelling can be a continuation of your matchbox story.

Friday 2nd August: 9-3: COLLAGE – Having worked hard all week we should now have a huge supply of exciting and beautiful papers, some of the sketches, drawings, prints we made, that can be cut up and things that we have found along the way in the garden – perfect to make into a beautiful collage.

The last afternoon will be spent tidying up and getting our exhibition ready for family and friends to come and admire what we have achieved.

These workshops are aimed at children from 7 upwards who enjoy being creative and imaginative, to get the most out of the sessions it is advisable to book all 5, cost £300, however you can enrol for individual sessions if so wishing, cost £65.  All sessions are led by Frances, a practising artist in her art studio in St Peters.  There will be a short break mid morning and early afternoon with juice and biscuits provided and a half hour break for lunch so please bring packed lunch with you.  There will be a relaxation marquee for eating lunch, playing board games and reading if your child wishes to take a rest from all the activities.

Because numbers are limited in each workshop early booking is advisable, please email me directly,

12th August 9.30-12:  MOSAIC:  create a mosaic plant pot and a plate for it to stand on (if you have time) – we will also plant a magical mystery plant seed in the pot to take home.

13th August 9.30-12: BLACKBOARD ART: using chalk pastels we will create a beautifully framed piece of wall mounted art.

14th August 9.30-12: PRINTING: monotype and stryrofoam printing of garden inspired objects.

15th August 9.30-12: MIXED MEDIA ART: using sketches we made of donkeys and inventing a wondrous landscape for them to live in using all sorts of materials.

16th August 9.30-12: POP ART: looking at animals, plants and still life in the garden using bright acrylic paint to make a wall mounted piece of art.

The cost of each workshop is £26 which includes a biscuit and juice half way through the session, option of staying for lunch (please bring your own) with pick up at 1.30pm, £14 extra.

 30th August: Introduction to pastels

Great effects can be achieved by using pastels; they are instant colour without the need for brushes or mess. Lots of fun, we will be using bright folk art as our inspiration to create our finished framed piece of artwork.

9.30 – 12.30  £30 including all materials and snacks at break

2nd September: Introduction to oil painting

Amazing opportunity to try using oil paints in a simple step by step impressionist project on a canvas. Oil paint can be used in a textural way or simply by applying layers of glazes.  It is a fun medium to experiment with and allows great artistic freedom.  Oil paint does not come out of clothes so please dress accordingly.

9.30-12.30  £35 including all materials and snacks at break

please email Frances on for more details
